My magazine will be called Lunacy, this is a word used to describe the state of being unwell and being crazy. I have named it this as it connotes the life of music artist when fame gets to them and they tend to go crazy and loose sanity in life at a stage they can no longer deal with it.
Purpose:
The purpose of this magazine is to entertain and promote, the magazine is based on music artists so this will promote them and also information about music will entertain the target audience as they will want to read the magazine for entertainment and also the latest news on Sheffield artist/bands to stay updated and hear the knew styles in their city.
Genre:
The product I am making is a local magazine for Sheffield, I have chosen to do this because i am from Sheffield and to base it on my local area will give me information I need to add that I already know about so there will be no researching needed for content.
I am making a music magazine, I have decided to do this as I love music and have friends that also create their own music, doing a magazine that I will enjoy creating will keep me interested and I will also have plenty of information on Sheffield bands I can add for content this will give me endless amounts of content I can choose from to add into the magazine.
For the content of this magazine I have been asked to make the front cover and a double page spread if I want to, I have chosen to do this as I can add the information I want to and photographs I have taken as I want to create more than just a front cover.
Front Cover: For my front cover I have used an Ariel Black font on Adobe Photoshop CC 2019 as this is a san-serif font that stands out just like every artist tries to do in the music industry. Using a bold font also looks very professional as musicians are professionals at what they do and this creates a link together. I will be using basic colours of black, orange and white, maybe a bit of grey. I have chosen to use these colours as there will only be one colour that stands out and won't be too bright or too distracting from anything else and this will also help the front cover look more professional. The photograph for the front cover will be my model Stanley with the guitar head across his face as my magazine is about music so it would create a music look by just using an image of an instrument on the front cover straight away. The cover line will be Lunacy as this is the name of my magazine which states the situation of loosing your mind and becoming a lunatic.
Contents Page: The contents page will be simple and just to show target audience what content is on each page and how to navigate round it so they can skip the information that they don't feel they need/want to read. The layout will be a basic three colours of black, white and one bright colour to create and effect and to stand out but not take away from the whole page. A basic Ariel Black font spread across the top to stand out and look bold just like music artists try to do in the music industry.
1st Double Page Spread: The photograph ideas I have are to get my model standing confident but also looking laidback and cool about everything as this is what most artists are doing, they are professionals in the music industry but also very cool about everything at the same time. I will have the model looking into the camera holding an instrument wether it be a guitar, a keyboard or a microphone. The colour scheme will be orange, black/grey and white, I have chosen these colours as I can keep it looking professional but also add one colour to stand out and bring attention to the page, using one bright colour over blacks and greys also doesn't cause distraction as if there was too much going off on one page for the target audience to get confused with what to look at. The body for my double page spread will be built up on a paragraphed interview on why the artist makes the music/does the things he does and why he the music comes out that he creates if its for a movement or down to emotions.
2nd Double Page Spread: On this page I will have information on upcoming gigs and chances to win tickets for the gigs, I will be doing this as the target audience has bought the magazine specifically for music that they interested in. Also the articles that will be featured in this 2nd double page spread will be information about artist and also a few interview questions asked to the artist so the target audience will understand and know more about the artists personal life and why they create the music, I have decided to add interview questions as a majority of music magazines today add interviewed questions with the artist for information about them for the target audience to be entertained and want to read more in other magazines causing them have to buy it and bring in more money for the companies.
Target Audience: The target audience for my magazine will be 15+ with both a small and large disposable income as the magazine isn't going to be too expensive for anymore. The demographics will be both male and female lovers that spend all their free time listening to music or making music/playing instruments as this is what most music lovers do with their free time, I have not aimed the magazine at just male or female as music isn't stereotyped at a specific gender and is loved by both genders that are interested in music.
Resources & Personnel:
1) For my music magazine I will be creating I will be doing everything myself, I will be taking the images myself, editing them and also creating the magazine. Doing this will help as I enjoy music as a hobby also having many music magazines myself so I know the information used in most magazines and how they are laid out in a specific way to attract the target audience.
2) The hardware I will need is:
- Cannon 650+ DSLR Camera (High quality photographs)
- MacBook (As this is what I use for editing)
- Tripod (To take still perfect images)
3) The software I will need is:
- Adobe Photoshop CC 2019 (Best software for editing images and creating them)
4) The first model I will be using is my friend Stanley, I have decided to use him as he has a look of an indie music artist, and he also makes music with his own bedroom studio, this will help in the image as he can stand up looking cool with a background of music equipment. Stanley also dresses smart but causal which connotes the look of an indie artist. The second model will also be a music artist I grew up with, this will make it easier to get the photographs as he will be up for letting me use him in my magazine due to friendship.
DISTRIBUTION & MARKETING METHODS:
I can use synergy to promote the magazine/brand by using the local radio station 'Sheffield Life' as this will also be the best possible way to reach the target audience as they are already listening to the radio for music so if the radio station promote the magazine they will have full attention on anything they say. I will be distributing my magazine in the record shop Spinning Disks on Chesterfield Road, this is an independent record shop based in Sheffield, this will fit perfectly with magazine as they are both local and independent musically based. This will also be pretty affordable as the staff in Spinning Disks do all they can to help new up and coming artists/bands in Sheffield for free but if I will be distributing my magazine, I am sure they will want a cut from the magazines sold as they're being sold in their own shop for free. the frequency of my magazine will be monthly as it will be quite hard to find music content based on new artists/music/events every week as you don't find new music or artist every week. Using Spinning Disks as a shop to distribute my magazine will also be helpful as they could leave copies on the desk for when the target audience are going to buy their records, they will see the copy of my magazine with time to make their mind up on if they want to buy it or not before leaving. I will also advertise my magazine in a skate shop E.G. Slugger Skate Store as all skaters love music and they will be in there to buy new clothes/skate products and they will be able to see the music magazine in person while purchasing their other products they can scan though my magazine quickly enough to add it to their purchases as they will be interested in up and coming music events so they can attend to them and hear the new Sheffield sounds, this also helps as the skate shop is Sheffield/local based. Another place I can also distribute my magazine in a heavily populated student coffee shop/hangout, this will be beneficial to my magazine as it will reach the younger audience of Sheffield as they will be interested in finding out about new sounds instead of the older generation that already have their hearts set on the bands they grew up with and not being interested in experimenting with new artists anymore. One of the last places I could distribute my magazine will be a retro shop as pretty much anyone that is into music are bothered about their appearance and how they look, this will also help the magazine as it is local based and the people in the shop will be local and interested in the music.
