L01: Sample Materials (Masthead Designs)

Here are a few magazine mastheads that I find eye-catching, some are pretty basic but this doesn't cause a distraction away from the rest of the magazine however they are still bold and stand out so the audience know who the magazine is issued by, it also creates branding straight away for the target audience/readers to know the company of these magazines for the future.

Here is how I have made my masthead titled 'Lunacy' meaning the state of mind/going crazy which connotes some artists that lose their mind when becoming famous and becoming some what insane with life. I have used a typeface called 'Backspacer OT' I got from an Adobe software full of crazy fonts, this one felt the best to use as it looks distorted and gritty with indie rock rock vibe, which fits perfectly as I am creating an indie rock magazine

Here are the stages of me creating my first ideas into a magazine, I have used Photoshop CC 2018, this is the newest version of photoshop so I will be able to create everything I want digitally to without having to draw it out on paper. I have used few tools and mostly basic ones such as an Eraser, Paint Bucket, Levels, Rectangle Tool, Type Tool and the Lasso Tool. All these helped perfectly to create my first attempt of a magazine, I used the eraser and lasso tool to remove the background of the photograph I took of Toby and make sure I removed every little part of the background behind him so I could add a plain one in photoshop, I then went on to used the levels in adjustments so I could bring all the colours of him in as I was using a black background so didn't want him to look too pale or bright. Using the Rectangle tool I was able to add the boxes round some of the texts and use it and an underline on the masthead so that they manage to stand out that little bit more. I use the type tool to get all my writing in for the masthead and the other text round the magazine so that it stands out rather than being plain

1) Text - I am going to use a bold typewriter font in black as this connotes the old typewriter look and in education it involves a lot of writing

2) Shapes - I will use basic shapes like squares and rectangles instead of circles as I feel it looks more professional and organised but that is personal preference.

4) Three Colours - Orange, Black & White, this will keep the basic look and will look more organised and professional rather than having more bright colours than one that contrasts on the black and white
